Titans Return Hot Rod & Firedrive

Generations Titans Return Hot Rod & Firedrive

Hot Rod is a popular Transformers character and was one of the first to get a Classics deluxe version in 2006. Since then he's been a Titanium, Universe 2 Legends and a larger Combiner Wars Legends as well as appearing in two Platinum sets Rise of Rodimus, which used the Titanium version, and Clash on the Planet of Junk, which used a slightly updated version of the now 10 year old Classics mold. Even given two reuses this year he's probably due a new deluxe version and so he gets one in Titans Return.

None of the Movie Autobots had the Headmaster gimmick which has been redone in Titans Return but Hot Rod, Blurr & Kup were all redone as Targetmasters and there's already been a Titans Return Blurr which turns his Targetmaster Haywire into Titanmaster Hyperdrive. Hot Rod follows the same pattern by turning Targetmaster Firebolt into Titanmaster Firedrive. This results in an all grey Titanmaster that while evocative of Firebolt isn't what you'd expect from Hot Rod's Titanmaster which really should be a mini Hot Rod with something like a yellow or orange chest and red arms, legs & head for a red Hot Rod, and not everyone agrees Hot Rod should be red. That would result in an all red head for the deluxe, which would look decent. What we get is the traditional Hot Rod face and helmet surround with a big grey blocky lump behind it.

I've found attaching the head to the body to be more traumatic than most Titans Returns toys. I've gone for leaning the front of the top forwards slightly and rocking the Titanmaster's head into the socket. Once attached to the deluxe body it makes a large toy which is about an inch taller than Classics Hot Rod and somewhat bigger all round. Nowhere is this more noticeable than the hands: The Classics version has very small hands, so much so the peg holes were moulded to a size smaller than the standard 5mm whereas the Titans Return version is now the standard size. He comes with a pair of rifles to hold which are virtually a mirror image of each other and, with their long barrels, reminiscent of the gun the character wielded as Rodimus Prime. Said guns attach to form a dual barrelled weapon but sadly, unlike Twinferno, there isn't a 5mm peg on the underside, the handle's just stick out to the sides. This means that, until someone on Shapeways provides an adaptor, Arms Micron B2 will be continuing to serve as my stand in for Firebolt in double barrelled gun mode. Additional 5mm holes can be found on the side of each shoulder to mount the guns on.

Unfortunately the thing that really stands out for me in this mode is a huge grey stripe down the sides of his body, which really stands out and looks wrong. It's another piece that could have done with being moulded in red plastic to match the rest of Hot Rod's body and would have helped bring the toy together instead of making his body look like a sandwich with grey filling between two slices of red bread. The chest looks rather odd too with a section at the bottom cut away to reveal a six pack like stomach panel. It's not his engine, that's higher up the chest as per usual. Most odd. Fortunately this one's curable: fold his chest, formed as usual from the car's bonnet, up at the top of the body and fold the missing portion out before folding the chest back into place. The Chest won't quite be flush with the grey part now but the chest will look better from the front. The chest panel detail hints at an unlikely retool, as do the very un-Hot Rod grey kneecaps, but some blame has to be attached to the design of the chest/car nose for not being able to fold flat. Maybe a different cut out section, involving just the underside of the car nose, would have worked better. The grey plastic is also used for leg front detail and feet, which works OK, and for the exhaust pipe guns on his arm, but even there they look a little plasticy and could do with being painted or, better yet, chromed. The lower legs look a bit too thin and look odd without wheels and pipes on the side. You can achieve that by folding the rear of the legs out to the side but that then leaves you with the lower leg interior exposed, the kind of thing many Transformers fans have moaned about in recent years.

Articulation: The hinged ankles are immobilised by the configuration on the instructions sheets and you'll need to fold the rear of the lower legs round to the sides to use the pinned joint there for posing the figure. Knees bend and thighs swivel. The hips are far FAR too loose and it appears it's a problem on all examples of the toy. Time to breakout whichever is your favourite method for tightening loose ball joints. The waist turns as does the head, thanks to the Titanmaster's ball jointed neck. The shoulders move up and down at the body as part of the Transformation and are ball jointed at the arms. There's a low bicep swivel, just above the elbow, and the elbow bends.

Apart from that it's a decent looking Hot Rod. Most of what's wrong with the robot that can be fixed by making the grey red on the as yet unrevealed TakaraTomy Legends version thought the chest could still do with being filled in at the bottom and maybe having a slightly wider border at the toy.

Transformation: remove guns and Titanmaster. Fold the chest up, as you do on most Hot Rod's, and fold the front bumper out from under the chest. Rotate the waist 180° before things start getting in the way. Straighten the arms to the sides and fold the hands in. They don't quite fold all the way, the first knuckle will be sticking out. Move the arms up & in by folding up at the body shoulder joint and down at the arm shoulder joint, tabbing the shoulders onto the bonnet. Place so the robot's front faces downwards and the car bonnet top and leg fronts face up. Fold the rear of the legs out to the sides then tab the legs together. Fold the feet in. Fold the lower legs back & up 180° at the knee so they cover the upper legs. Tabs on the sides go inside the wrists. The pipes on the arms fit into the pipes on the legs. Bend the spoiler section back 90°, then rotate it 180° before bending back a further 90° degrees making sure the slots on the two spoiler supports fix onto the tabs on the rear of the car.

I can't really fault the design of the car mode, it looks really good. My only nitpicks involve small parts of the colours used: the grey exhaust pipes look a little plasticy still and in addition the spoiler's yellow looks a little odd. Close inspection reveals that the yellow paint, which is actually two layers as his leaked colour chart reveals, is over a piece moulded in the same blue plastic as the car's canopy window. Most of the time it looks OK but under certain bright light it looks a little odd. Personally I'd prefer it moulded in yellow plastic by itself but I can understand how tool economics affects a toy. A similar problem afflicted Classics Rodimus who had his spoiler moulded on the same sprue as the upper legs. And yeah, the grey and orange on the canopy hinge stick out amongst the red looking out of place and both would be better as a matching red.

There is one feature of the car mode that's really worthy of praise. After having had clear windows on the original and classics versions we finally have a Hot Rod whose driving compartment can be opened for you to put a figure in, something that I've always wanted since seeing Daniel ride in Hot Rod in Transformers The Movie. Unfortunately the compartment interior is moulded in the grey plastic that annoyed me so much in robot mode. With the window closed over it all looks fine but open the compartment to insert the Titanmaster and it looks dreadful. It doesn't help that the all grey Titanmaster just merges with his surroundings sitting in there!

As we've said the two guns merge together and although they don't have a 5mm handle underneath the weapon there are two tabs which slot into the engine block giving him a dual cannon as if he had Firebolt mounted on him. Firedrive or another Titanmaster can sit in this cannon. Alternately the shoulder holes are now on the side of the car so you can mount the dual cannon one side of the car or a gun on each side.

In addition to the cockpit and the dual cannon there are also two widely spaced Titanmaster footpegs on the rear of the car which allow a further two Titansmasters to stand on Hot Rod.

So. Slightly iffy robot due to some paint and moulding choices with really wonky hips. A combined gun he can't hold flat horizontally. But the main problem is that there's just too much grey on this toy, probably as a result of the Titanmaster going for an authentic Firebolt look. Now if they'd have gone for something more Hot Rod like, all red with maybe an orange chest, that would have lost the dreadful grey in the body and car cockpit. Wheels would still need painting, as would feet and exhaust pipes. I await the Takara version with some interest....

In a change to the standard configuration used through Combiner Wars and into the first two waves of Titans Return Hot Rod is packed at 3 per case in Titans Return Deluxe Wave 3 with 2 each of Twinferno & Triggerhappy and a single Breakaway/Getaway filling out the wave.

Future Repaints

Original Rodimus provides us with two well used repaints in his Clear & Black. Then we're onto the Classic Hot Rod Repaints: Botcon Shattered Glass & Henkei Wildrider, both black variants, United Clear Blue & TFCC Sideburn. Alternators Rodimus gives us Mirage & Rijie while from the Legend we get Smokescreen & Wal*Mart Curry Rodimus

As we mentioned above it seems like an unlikely retool for Hot Rod might be Cyclonus!

Titans Return Titanmaster Overboard and Legends Servant

Legends Servant

For those keeping track this is Overall Use number 4 of the Titanmaster accessory and Japanese use number 2. His placing with Mindwipe is somewhat controversial since it is the second time Crashbash has been used as a pack in but the pack ins with original Headmasters seem to be limited to the first two waves of toys. That means there's six unique toys to be shared amongst 7 Headmasters and since there's only two Beast accessories and Takara are looking to match the accessories to the deluxes as vehicle to vehicle and beast to beast, then the choice is a little limited!

The colours chosen here are great: a metallic dark grey for Crashbash's purple and a dark burgundy red for Crashbash's grey resulting in a colour scheme on the dinosaur very VERY similar to the Tomy Zoids Iguan. It's a shame he has no matching Titanmaster to complete the look, the arms on Wipe's Vorath are purple and stick out a bit in Dinosaur mode.

Servant was packed with Legends LG-34 Wipe and released at the end of November 2016.

Titans Return Overboard

Overboard is another name change, in this case he's the Decepticon formerly known as Overkill. The names are close and virtually mean the ems thing. In a way it's a little disappointing he's shown up as a Titanmaster as it probably reduces the chances of their being a Legends Tape version to go with Soundwave, not that they look like doing many more after Wave 2 anyway! I suspect the logic for doing Overkill from Crashbash is that the Universe Overkill was a repaint of Classics Grimlock and Grimlock's already been done from Crashbash as Clobber.

Colour Swaps: Crashbash's purple becomes blue and the grey becomes much lighter, almost white. The Dinosaur head gets a paint app to make it white too. The Titanmaster uses the original Crashbash face but I do wonder if they'd have been better going with Grimlock's.

Stats: Fifth Crashbash dinosaur/dragon use, third in the west and in consecutive waves too! Fourth use of the Titanmaster, Third in the west, again in consecutive waves. Third use of that Titanmaster face, second in the west. It's a good toy and probably still the best Titanmaster but I think that's enough for now! Against that the Dinosaur looks really nice and very Overkill so, if they weren't doing him as a tape, the use of repainting Crashbash is a sensible one.

Titans Return Titanmaster Ptero

Titans Return Ptero

Of the 1985 Dinobots, Swoop always held a special place for me. Partly that was due to his place in UK Toy Mythology: we got toys of Grimlock, Slag, Snarl & Sludge here in the UK but no Swoop. He missed out again in the Classics line, where Grimlock, Sludge & Snarl got re-released, and also misses out in Generation 2 when we get new colours for Grimlock, Slag & Snarl. We didn't get the 2003 "Armada" Dinobots, where Grimlock, Sludge, Snarl, Swoop and Triceradon (Slag) are joined by Slapper. (honestly, you loose one Dinobot name that might be offensive in Britain and gain another with almost exactly the same meaning!) Due to overstocks of early cases we never saw the Energon Mega Dinobot set consisting of Grimlock & Swoop in the UK and when the Grimlock was re-released in Age of Extinction, Swoop wasn't. We DID get Animated Swoop in 2008, the first released in the UK, along with Grimlock & Snarl. Age of Extinction gave us new versions of all the Dinobots, but I suppose the closest we in the UK get to a "classics" Swoop is when the Wal*Mart 2 packs featuring Grimlock, Slug (Slag) and Strafe (Swoop) were released here through ASDA and we got the Beast Wars Terrorsaur repainted in a cartoon and Diaclone appropriate blue.

The Titanmaster figure in Titans Returns has gone for an alternate approach and has the colours the toy does: all grey with red chest & upper legs. In some ways it's sad that the grey here is different to the grey used on the Grimlock Titanmaster Clobber, but the grey here is closer the silver used on the original Dinobots. Swoop wouldn't be my ideal candidate for a Headmaster/Titanmaster because the distinguishing feature for his head is the crest/fin sticking out the back of the head, formed from the crest of the pteranodon mode head. There's a hint of that on his forehead but otherwise they've gone for a toy accurate approach with the head mode with a black helmet rather than the cartoon's red. It looks OK but it isn't really screaming Swoop at me.

However the accessory IS saying Swoop: it's a mechanical pteranodon with a red body and grey wings & nose. The wings move up & down and the mouth opens. The Titanmaster looks like he should sit in this mode, and indeed he can loosely, but his official configuration here is to bend him into a seated position, open the door on the underside and slide the legs through so the ankle spur locks into the hole on the pteranodon's tale and the head slides into a slot under the pteranodon's neck. It holds solidly and helps bulk out the dinobird's body.

The hinging in the neck is interesting and used in the Transformation to vehicle mode. The lower jaw is attached to the neck halfway along it's length and then attached to the top of the head at the back. This means the head can be flipped round so the jaw runs under the underside of the neck with the beak to the rear and a gun barrel to the front. Turn the dinobird over and fold up the seat & wings to form a jet for the Titanmaster to ride in. Footpegs on the underside of the base of the dinobird neck, now the jet floor, help secure him in place.

The one man jet mode is OK, but I think I prefer it with the wings folded out to the sides.

From jet mode remove the Titanmaster, fold down the wings & seat and fold the handle out the back of he vehicle to form the weapons mode.

Ptero's weapons mode is a bow, something occasionally seen with Transformers. While it's nice to see something a little out of the ordinary I'm struggling a bit with this one as it is, essentially, the dinobird on it's side!

I'm pleased to see another Dinobot head in the Titanmasters line to compliment Clobber. It works in all it's modes, but the pteranodon is definitely the best. Now what about Slag, Sludge and Snarl?

Future Repaints

The obvious repaint for this would be to swap the red for blue and the black paint on head for red to produce a version matching the original Transformers cartoon. An all red version as Terrorsaur would be nice too as would something in black/purple Decepticon colours.

Titans Return Titanmaster Fangry

Titans Returns Fangry

I've always felt that Fangry was the most popular of the 1988 Decepticon Headmasters amongst Transformer fans, although I personally thought Squeezeplay was a better toy! So it came as something of a surprise when Horri-bull and Squeezeplay were done in the first wave of Titanmasters and Fangry missed out till the third wave. But while their Titanmaster versions, Terri-bull & Crashbash, came packaged with accessories with no links to the original a bit more effort has been made with Fangry so maybe the wait was worth it.....

The Fangry Titanmaster figure uses similar colours to the original, a pinky purple and black, but doesn't quite get them in the right place. The original Headmaster had black legs and purple arms, body and head. The body is the same but everything else has been swapped round! A close look at the Titanmaster confirms it's identity even including the two slots on the face plate. His head mode meanwhile is pretty much spot on and here the choice of the black for the arms on the Titanmaster helps build a larger black head whereas the original configuration would have produced a purple stripe down each side.

Our first glimpse of Titanmaster Fangry at Cybertron Con 2016 wasn't that encouraging as it showed the big robot head looking out of the Fangry beast chest. Thankfully that was mis-transformed! The accessory comes in beast mode in the packaging with the Titanmaster figure. All it needs is to have the gun mode handle/second beast head folded up, and the wings folded forward to the sides, to reveal a space in it's back that the Titanmaster in head mode can be slid in with the rear of the head/Titanmaster's legs going in first. The legs fold down onto to pegs at the front of the toy and the wings & second beast head fold back all but covering the large head face from the rear.

The Fangry beast, once again a sort of upright wolf with bat wings, has been rendered almost perfectly but once again there's some colours that could have been changed. If they'd have gone with the original Headmaster's black legs the beast would now have a black chest. The now much larger wings are rendered in purple and they'd look better in black. His tail, previously his gun, is now a gun barrel for another mode. Arms move up & down independently while the legs are connected through the hips and move together.

Fangry has lost his larger robot mode but gained a second beast mode. Remove the Titanmaster head from the beast's chest and fold the wolf head into it. Fold the wings so they're straight out to the sides. Fold both arms and the legs forward 90°. Sit the Titanmaster figure so his feet are down the gap behind the beast head & in front of the wings.

This is the second dragon mode for a Titans Return Titanmaster and it works quite well. The handle sticking out the throat is odd but I suppose that could be a gun barrel as could the tail again.

For his weapons mode fold the Fangry beast head right the way back into the body, inserting the Titanmaster in dragon mode will have pushed it out a bit, the fold the dragon head back against it. Fold the wings down to the side. Turn the dragon over. Fold the dragon forelegs/Fangry beast arms back so they're either side of the handle. Fold the rear beast legs down beside the tail.

Like Crashbash's weapon mode Fangry also forms a triple barrelled weapons, with the tail forming one barrel and the Fangry Beast legs/dragon legs forming the other two barrels courtesy of holes moulded into the feet. It's quite a compact weapon and does the job. It would have made a nice pack in weapon for a Japanese Legends figure and in it's present colours would even have matched up well with LG-34 Wipe and allowed it to be eventually matched with the Fangry head.

Bar some minor gripes about colour placement on the Titanmaster and Fangry beast they've done a pretty good job here. He's the most similar to his 1988 counterpart than any of the five 1988 Headmasters done so far.

Future Repaints

I don't think we're quite done with versions of Fangry in Titans Return. I could easily see a remould of Twinferno, with a wolf head that splits in two down the middle to form arms replacing the two Dragon heads & arms, making a half decent deluxe Fangry.

Speaking of the Monsterbots ..... As well as Doublecross being done in Titans Return as the deluxe Twinferno, a new Titanmaster version of Repugnus was shown at New York Comic Con 2016, The leaves Grotusque who would be an easy remould of Fangry, just change the wolf head.

Titans Return Titanmaster Sawback

Titans Return Sawback

One of the main inspirations behind the Titanmasters is the Autobot Master Warriors released exclusively in Japan at the same time as the Headmasters in 1987. Sold separately they are one new Headmaster head which can be used as a substitute or replacement for an existing Headmaster. Kirk, Rodney & Loafer are fairly similar to the original Headmasters in that they transform into robots but Toraizer, Shuffler & Lione are different, they turn into animal robots: a tiger, elephant and lion respectively. It's not altogether a surprise to see them being done in Titans Return as Titanmaster though I have to admit that I thought they were on the lower end of possibility on people's wish lists. Shuffler was shown at New York Comic Con 2016 while Lione was revealed earlier in the year at San Diego Comic Con and was renamed Sawback, matching the recently released RiD Lion Minicon.

The Titanmaster itself deviates from the original Lione by giving Sawback a humanoid robot form but, in a nod to the original, gives him a lion's head which means he'll line up nicely alongside Twinferno's Titanmaster Daburu. The colours are in line with the original too, mainly orange with a yellow chest and yellow upper legs. The head mode is pretty close to the original, moulded in orange but they've painted the face yellow to differentiate it from the rest of the head. It's a bit different but it works better and it matches the head of his accessory's beast mode. The detailing on the head is good down to having what would of been the original toy's lion head embedded in the forehead. As an orange head you instinctively want to use him with Sentinel Prime but annoyingly the shades of orange are just slightly different, Sawback's being a tad paler. However the yellow on the face helps tie in with Sentinel's yellow highlights so it just about works.

Onto the accessory: I haven't seen a Transformer packaged in such an odd way for such a long time! You might think it's Sawback's shield mode but it's not! Both lion legs point down, with the tail at the bottom, handle at the top and lion face the wrong way up! Not exactly helping to sell the toy....

So start by turning the toy the other side up, so the face is looking at you the right way up. Then swing the set of legs which are now at the bottom back and down 180°. The legs are connected to each other and the shield's handle so they'll move as one piece. You'll run into trouble half way through as the handle makes contact with the Lion head's beard but help them pass each other and you'll be ok. That contact is however quite annoying and I don't see a way round it. Fold the rear legs down behind the toy. Fold the silver wings down and bring them together under the Lion head.

In hand the shield is much better than it looked in the pictures and is surprisingly solid. It's not without an issue though! Most Transformer weapons have the 5mm peg inserted into the top of the hole. Sawback is different for the lion head to be the right way up on the shield facing you the handle needs to be inserted from the bottom of the hand which means he can only be used with figures with a hole right the way through their fist. Sawback's handle also needs decent contact with the hand hole to hold him in place. I tried him with Blaster and he slipped out the fist! He was fine with Sentinel Prime though. Yes you could hold him the other way up but then the face on the shield would look wrong. The handle also isn't that far out from the back of the shield so larger hands, like on Combiner Wars figures, can't hold him and figures without a 5mm peg won't be able to either.... but there again I don't think any toy in the Generations line should be without 5mm peg hole hands.

From shield mode fold the legs down under the toy and stand it. Separate the silver wings and fold them so they point backwards over the rear legs. Fold the Lion head forward. Fold the Titanmaster into head mode and slide it into the rear of the Lion's head so it faces down: there's a square hole for the Titanmaster's head and pegs on the top of it's mane for it's feet holes.

The way the Titanmaster's arms and legs integrate with the lion head to form a complete and textured mane is really rather good. It's just about passable as a lion without the Titanmaster and really works with it in place. The only real issue then is a big gap in the rear of the lion's body but that just provides a space for a second Titanmaster to ride in. The silver wings, which are mounted on ball joints, can be folded forward to provide guns at the side of the head just like Beast Wars II Lioconvoy. Articulation otherwise is a little limited: the rear legs move independently of each other but the front legs are connected to each other and the shield handle. The shield handle is now resting against the Titanmaster so it can't move forward, and thus the legs can't move back. You could move the front legs forward but that would then hit anything riding behind the head. Best treat it as a static item.

Sawback also has a vehicle mode. Start by removing the Titanmaster. Press down on the tail to raise up the rim of the rear of the body and fold the Lion head back into it before closing the rim back round the head. Fold all four legs back. Turn it over onto the lion's back. Fold the wings, which are orange on their underside, out to the side. Sit the Titanmaster in the front of the vehicle with his feet on the yellow pegs visible through the hole.

This is very much a "stretch your imagination" mode but it appears they were aiming for some sort of Cybertronian aircraft with the shield handle forming the gun poking out the front. A bit odd and a nice bit of fun.

The main purpose of the toy was to provide new version of Lione. I think they've managed that. OK the head doesn't turn into a Lion any more which is a shame but the lion theme is still there in the head's design and the accessory. Shields are rare in Transformers so the accessory makes a nice add on and the Lion mode looks nice. From there the plane is a bit of extra fun. Sawback hadn't done much for me from his pictures but in hand he's a lot of fun.

Sawback is a Wave 3 Titans Return Titanmaster sold with Fangry, Overkill & Ptero (Swoop).

Future Repaints

Several repaints suggest themselves: Blue as the aforementioned RiD Sawback, White & Gold as Lionconvoy, Black & Yellow as Predacon Leader Razorclaw, brown & yellow as Beats Wars Prowl and all white in a homage to the exclusive version of the original Lione. I can see an all white set of him, Shuffler and whichever other Autobot Master Warriors are done being lined up for a 2017/18 convention exclusive somewhere!

Legends Chromedome & Titans Return Breakaway

Legends Chromedome

Legends Chromedome takes the Titans Return vesion, gives it a new face, and pairs it with a brown version of Titanmaster Nightbeat's drill/jet accessory.

Legends Brainstorm

Legends Brainstorm takes the Titans Return vesion, gives it a new face, and pairs it with a blue version of Titanmaster Brawn's gun/jeep accessory. It's not the first blue jeep in Transformers and unfortunately it has brought the disturbing image of Energon Strongarm back to mind.

Legends Chromedome

Chromedome has been tweaked for his Legends release, but only slightly. In car mode the bonnet decal has been reduced in size and the red flash on the side of the car removed. The elbow piece, which was brown breaking up the side of the car, is now cream, instead breaking up the brown on the top of the sides. The windows are completely transparent now allowing you to see inside. A layer of silver paint outlines the cockpit and helps highlight the Titanmaster inside. His Titanmaster Stylor has swapped the brown chest for grey so he more closely matches the original Chromedome's Stylor and has gained some silver paint on his forehead, blue painted eyes and and orange face, all of which are non contact surfaces when attaching him in head mode.

In robot mode the arms are now cream all the way down as are the hands which gives us a plainer looking, but more accurate to the original, toy. The feet too have switched from brown to cream all but confirming the feet, hands & elbows are on the same sprue. The front of the lower legs are now painted brown. The Titanmaster's faceplate has changed to give the head straighter sides.

You can see comparisons between the 1987 original, Titans Return & Legends Chromedomes in Alfes Blog Entry 2723.

Like the other three 1987 Autobot Headmasters, and the three Decepticons from the same year released so far, Chromedome come with an additional Titanmaster accessory. His is Moguru, a repaint of Nightbeat's jet/drill accessory. Legends Nightbeat himself is packed separately with LG-28 Rewind. The drill swaps Nightbeat's pale blue for Chromedome's more earthy brown and the yellow for red. Cream painted side panels and a gold painted drill bit complete the look which is a vast improvement on the original.

LG-32 Chromedome was released in Japan on Saturday 26th November 2016. Alfes has a gallery of the toy at Blog Entry 2722

Titans Return Breakaway with Throttle

Getaway is another character who has come to recent prominence due to More Than Meets The Eye. He's had another version previously, Wal*Mart/Asda exclusive Breakaway, a repaint of Cybertron Hotshot originally meant for the Universe 2 toy line.

A colour chart for Titans Return Getaway, and several other toys, was leaked in April 2016 revealing it to be a straight repaint of Chromedome with a new face. Hasbro then accidentally revealed Getaway, now under the name Breakaway again when product brought to Cybertron Con 2016 showed the toy on Hot Rod's cardback!

While Getaway has had a name change to Breakaway, albeit one he's used before, his Powermaster Rev has also changed names becoming Titanmaster Throttle. Now this I do have a problem with as Throttle was previously used as the name for Darkwing's Powermaster! He's a blue for red and white for brown colour swap of Stylor, Chromedome's Titanmaster and indeed those belonging to Brainstorm and Blurr, making this the FOURTH use of this Titanmaster. The only change here is a new face piece which looks to be painted grey with a yellow faceplate and eyes. The eye could do with another paint application to differentiate them from the jaw but original Getaway had the same problem.

Breakaway's car mode is very white. Very VERY White. We've got some grey on the bumper and engine block, what was an approximation of original Chromedome's tech spec reader door and now roughly fills in for his Powermaster. Thin red and blue stripes on the bonnet, larger details in the same colours involving the Autobot symbols at the rear of the sides. The rear of the car is coloured blue to simulate his missing spoiler. The weapons are now blue, to match the colour if not the shape of original Getaway's weapons, and attach to the top of the car better than Chromedome's do. The windows have been tinted purple and look nice but are a poor match for the painted pink/purple that forms the rear of the side windows.

There's a bit more colour in robot mode. The inherited Chromedome knees & upper legs are grey, matching the original, but the waist is blue and we suspect that's on the same sprue as the larger of the two guns. The chest is painted purple and yellow, simulating the original's car roof chest. The arms are white all the way down which looks a little plain. The original's were blue, which would have created problems with the car mode, and similarly changing the hands to blue would have changed the elbows, also creating problems in car mode. Blue paint on the interior arm surfaces might have been nice and there's very little contact with other parts that would have prevented this from happening.

For the first straight up repaint in the Titans Return line Breakaway is a little plain. It does the job but could have been better.

Breakaway was released in Titans Return Wave 3. In a change to the pattern established during Combiner Wars the deluxe case he was in isn't packed evenly with two of each toy. Instead there's just one of Breakaway, the cheap repaint, and three of Hot Rod with two each of Twinferno & Triggerhappy.

Titans Return Twinferno & Dubaru

Titans Return Twinferno with Daburu

Rewind with me back to 1987. Young Phil is in the Beatties in Kingston, standing by the Transformers rack which at the time was to the left of the door, backing onto the front window, holding one of that year's new Transformers for the first time. It was one of the Horrorcons, probably Apeface as I have a memory of seeing that first. He turns the toy over and sees the battle scene art on the box back and sees the majority of that year's Transformers for the first time. One of the many that catch my eye is the two headed dragon fighting Mindwipe at the bottom right. I would later learn from the Headmasters limited series comic that this character was called Doublecross and he was a Monsterbot. There were two other Monsterbots Grotusque and Repugnus. Repugnus is also in that battle scene but all three Monsterbots, together with the giant Autobot Fortress Maximus and Decepticon multichanger Sixshot from the battle scene, were unreleased in UK that year. I was sad I never got to own one as I thought he looked fantastic. I got to play with one in 1992 when my friend Richard showed me his collection of imported Transformers. But somehow I've never got round to tracking down an original one myself.

So when a colour chart for Titans Return Doublecross, and others, was leaked I was quite pleased to see a new version of a toy I'd never had. However carded pictures of Deluxe Wave 3 revealed that his name had been changed to Twinferno, which shouldn't have come as a huge surprise as that name had been used for the character's last appearance in Tiny Titans Series 3 the previous year.

The same carded pictures revealed the name of his Titanmaster was Daburu but when we saw his official images there was a surprise to see the head was an eye patched lion head, a homage to the Beastformers character White Leo, seen in the Japanese Headmasters Cartoon episode Rebellion on Planet Beast. Doublecross was never a Headmaster in 1987 but it makes sense that he is as he's closely associated with them. He too features in Rebellion on the Beast Planet, and remains on the planet at the end of the episode, so a partnership with a Beastformer is perfect! As benefits the character he's modelled on Daburu is mainly white with a dark blue chest, similar to White Leo's armour, and grey upper legs. The sculpt is good enough to pick out the eyepatch detail on the Titanmaster's face and, when transformed, has a larger robot head that looks like the head on Doublecross. Win Win all round.

Cosmetically they've got Doublecross down to a tee with Twinferno, he looks nearly identical to the original. Changes include shrinking the previous chest detail down, making the lower legs black instead of grey and making the wings bigger, but narrower. They've preserved the 5mm peg hole hands in the sides of the dragon heads that form his arms and that's where we run into trouble. As peg the original having the dragon head side on means that the arms bend in at the elbows. To have them bend upwards Hasbro have added a bicep swivel to each arm. To bend the arm up you need to first rotate it 90° out to the side at the bicep which means the peg holes are now facing outwards! For me all Transformers should be able to bend their arms so the peg holes in their hands run top to bottom and the guns sit in the hands in a natural looking position and it's a major design failure on any that can't. The fix for it here would have been a swivel at the base of the neck which in turn would have given the dragon heads the ability to turn to the sides.

Almost to make up for this limitation the designers have gone all out with the guns themselves. Like Highbrow, and as the other Autobot Headmasters should have had, Twinferno has twin handguns. In addition to holding them via the 5mm pegs the guns can be mounted through a peg hole in the top corner of the wings. Forward of the peg on he underside of each gun is a thin tab and that can be plugged into a slot on Twinferno's red shoulder armour. Again like Highbrow the guns can be combined to form a dual cannon but, unlike Highbrow and Twinferno's wavemates Hot Rod & Triggerhappy, the guns combine so the 5mm pegs still face down so the robot can still hold the combined weapon sensibly, with the above caveats. The combined weapon uses the tabs on the underside to attach to the robot's back. There's a lot you can do with these guns, which have probably won my "best gun of 2016" award as this late stage but somehow the inability to bend the elbows and hold the gun right at the same time still grates.

We've mentioned the arm articulation already but in addition to the bending elbows and bicep swivels the arm folds out to the sides at the shoulder which also turns. The dragon heads open their mouths to simulate opening hands. The head turns courtesy of the ball joint in the Titanmaster's neck. The hips turn and pivot to the sides, the knees bend and, thanks to the transformation, the ankles rotate. The wings on his back can move 90° between folded back and straight out to the sides.

Transformation: Remove the head and the weapons. Straighten the arms out to the sides with the top of the heads facing back and the peg holes facing to the sides. Pull each shoulder away at the rear and fold over the chest, bringing both arms next to each other. Fold the chest, and both arms, up and back into the space occupied by the head. Now the theory here is that the slots on the shoulder pads lock onto tabs on the robot's neck. The practice is they don't easily on mine, with the slot on his robot's left shoulder (on our right) being to blame. From here fold the tail halves on the sides of the legs up which in turn allows you to fold the grey ankles and attached feet out to each side. You should then attempt to attach the legs together which has been another area of frustration for me as the tabs didn't want to lock into the slots. The lower legs then fold back over the upper legs at which point you'll probably need to put them back together again. It was at this point I went hunting for some pliers to help me and discovered both sets were missing! You might be tempted to fold the red crotch panel up now on the grounds that "it does move, so it should!" but don't or it'll cause problems later. The grey robot ankles then fold over the hips which should be tipped back about 40°. There's tabs on the back of the robot's sides, just above the waist. When the hips are orientated at the correct angle they should fit into the middle set of holes on the inside of the grey robot ankles. Again, another tabbing struggle but this one will eventually lock on solidly when you get it right! There's a pictorial tutorial on the 2005 boards that may help. Attempt to tab the tail halves together. Open the black smoked door on the chest, which would now be obscured by the crotch plate if you'd moved it, and seat Daburu inside. Mount the weapons either individually on his wings or combined on his back.

No deluxe transformation should be that frustrating! In the process I've had dragon wings, arms and heads come off and discovered that the hinges on the wings are a different size on each side.

Once completely transformed the dragon mode looks almost exactly as it did on the box back all those years ago. He's a grey dragon with black limbs & tail, black smoked wings and two white heads, each with two horns on the rear. There's a little red visible from the crotch plate and shoulders but not much. In many ways the colours are quite similar to the standard Dinobot colour scheme and both they and his general form fit right in with that team. His articulation is great: the ankles & knees bend, the hips rotate, the arms are on ball joints at the shoulders and both necks rotate at the base & bend half way down. Each head folds forward & features an opening jaw. With the dual cannon removed from his back there's a pair of Titanmaster footpegs for Daburu or another Titanmaster to stand on and when the cannon is attached there's a set for a Titanmaster to sit in.

I desperately want to love Twinferno. The transformation was a nightmare of tabbing, or rather things refusing to tab. I think I've sorted some of the problems there by adjusting how some parts, notably one of the shoulders, is fitted but the experience wasn't a fun one. The dragon mode is great, once properly tabbed together. The robot mode is good but the problem with the elbows & fist peg holes annoys me, it's one additional point of articulation per arm away from being really good. The guns are great, lots of fun with the options there. It's close to being really good and if I had one that worked as intended then I'd be happy. But I don't and from what I read other people have had similar issues to me.

Future Repaints

There aren't that many two headed dragons with wings in Transformers: most of the dragons have one head and most of the two headed creatures, like The Terrorcons, have no wings. However Robots in Disguise Megatron & Galvatron have both. Similarly replacing the two dragon necks with one the split in two to form the arms then he might make a really good Transmetal 2 Megatron/RiD Cryotek or Beast Wars II Galvatron.

Twinferno is, like Triggerhappy, packed at 2 per case in Titans Return Deluxe Wave 3 with 3 Hot Rods and a single Breaklaway/Getaway filling out the wave. Although he already has a a Titanmaster in Titans Return, a retool of Twinferno as Fangry seems an obvious thing to do. Simply replace the two dragon heads with a single wolf head that splits in two to form the arms.
